What the heck is a Baby Naming Ceremony?

As an Officiant and Celebrant I am trained to create and deliver many different types of ceremonies including Baby Namings.

As many families today are not religious, but would still like to share a meaningful celebration of their new baby, a Baby Naming Ceremony is the perfect choice to officially welcome your little one to the world and introduce them to friends and family. These ceremonies are family-focused, inclusive, and can take place in any location you choose.

Baby Naming Ceremonies can be completely personalized and customized with wording, content, and symbolism to suit your family and tastes. Ceremonies can include readings, music, bessings, prayers, bible readings, and friends and family are encouraged to take part. Ultimately, this ceremony is about the promises parents and the people around the will make to your baby, while sharing well wishes, blessings, and support.

Baby Naming Ceremonies typically include the reasons the baby’s name was chosen, the meaning of the names, the story of the baby’s birth, lots of beautiful readings, as well as your friends and/or family standing up as Supporting Adults, Godparents, or Guideparents who have been chosen to play a special role in your baby’s life making promises to you and your baby.

The Baby Naming Ceremony is also a nice time to honour loved ones who cannot be present with a moment of silence and thoughtful reflection to honour where you all came from. This is a lovely moment to include the children in attendance – they can blow bubbles to symbolize love and thoughts going up and out to absent loved ones.

The traditional role of a Godparent is to guide the child spiritually. For families who choose secular Guide Parents, your child is promised a special person in their life who offers support and love whole sharing the same values you do. Guide Parents promise to provide a loving influence on your child and sanctuary in times of difficulty.

Baby Naming Ceremonies can he held at just about any location. Your home, your backyard, parks, the beach, a hall or restaurant, and just about any other spot that is deemed safe.

If your Baby Naming Ceremony is taking place in your own garden, you could include a tree planting and you can all watch the tree grow as your child grows. You and your guests can all take part in planting the tree while making wishes for your baby. Another lovely ceremony to add is a sand ceremony. Everyone writes a wish for your baby and they drop the rolled up wish into a bottle. Once each guest has done this the bottle is sealed for your child to open when they are an adult and remember just how much they have been surrounded by love.
