With Halloween just around the corner, I thought it would be fun to share all of my favourite Spooktacular wedding ideas. Covid-19 changed how we get married in 2020, and many couples are embracing more fun and creative ideas to make sure their weddings are memorable and fun! October 31st lands on a Saturday this year, as well as a full moon that night, it is the perfect time to start planning your Halloween dream! The stores are filling up with Halloween decor so you can easily create a fantastic spooky wedding – and if you need help, just let me know…weddings are my jam!

Historic Venue
I always suggest finding your venue first and this is the time to search for a creepy gothic venue – preferably with a ghost story attached to it! If it doesn’t have a ghost story…make one up and have some fun with it! If you can’t find a venue that is creepy enough, just bring in a decorator to transform a room, hall, barn, or other space into a spooky wedding

Officiant
Ask your officiant to come in costume or festive outfit for your spooktacularly themed candlight ceremony – best done after 6pm. I already have my Halloween dress ready to show off at your Hallowedding! I have script written with all of the important parts plus a few fun readings to suit your spooky ceremony. Want to include some of your own choices? No problem! I love working with my couples to create the perfect ceremony for them!

Invitations
Have gothic or Halloween themed wedding invitations printed to set the tone and let your guests know exactly what to expect from your big day! There are small makers and printers in every town who will create the perfect Hallowedding invitations for you!

Costumes
Invite your guests to come in costume and consider a black wedding dress if you are the bride. You can always choose a colour theme for your guests to wear and see them get creative with it!

Table Settings
Give your reception tables creepy and festive names and get these sweet mini pumpkins to use as place cards! They are available all all of the farms when the big pumpkins are harvested! Hire a calligrapher to make them extra special.
Booquet (Get it? See what I did there?) and Flowers
Have your florist create your gothic and creepy bouquet and boutonnieres with seasonal flowers to match your theme and colours. Can’t get what you want? Ask for fake flowers – the really good ones look just like the real thing and you will have an easy time finding flowers to go perfectly with your spooktacular wedding!

Signage
Til death do us part is the perfect place to start when creating your Halowedding signage to welcome your guests and display the itinerary for your special day. If your wedding is outside don’t forget direction signs to the bar, smoking area, washroom, and shuttle buses at the end of the night. Up the creepy factor by making your signs look like old tombstones!

Music
Play Halloween themed music before your ceremony and when you are signing your marriage paperwork. You know that creepy organ music we all associate with haunted castles and funeral homes? Yeah…that’s what I’m talking about! And for your cocktail hour, dinner, and reception – scary movie soundtracks are full of great background music and songs or just play this Youtube collection of creepy instrumentals – you will feel like you are in a movie for sure!

Drinks
Serve spooky themed cocktails like pumpkin pie martinis, bloody Caesars, blood orange mimosas, gravediggers, and black widows. Create signage to let your guests know your custom cocktail menu and make sure your bartender has the list and recipes ahead of time so they can practice and perfect them!
Décor
Now is the time to buy all those pumpkins, bats, crows, cobwebs, skulls, tombstones, and black candles – now is the time for the dry ice and creepy flowers! Don’t forget to add a little sparkle…it is a wedding after all!

Food
Serve seasonal dishes like pumpkin soup and worms in dirt (a personal fave!), Halloween treats for your favours or candy table and don’t forget your creepy cake and decorated cookies for bonus dessert. Since it’s Pumpkin Spice season and the nights are chilly, how about a coffee bar with a professional barista serving up hot seasonal coffees and teas to keep everyone warm?

Photos
Ask your photog to do some spooky photoshop for your photos – have some fun with this and you will have some fantastic pics to enjoy til death do you part.

Guest Book
There are so many fab and creative guest books out there…and I especially love this pumpkin one where all of your guests sign it! Bring it out year after year for Autumn, Thanksgiving, and Halloween and remember everyone who helped you celebrate the most epic wedding ever!

Cemetery
Have you see those incredible spook cemetery wedding photos? I love them and have seen a few couples in my area in the cemetery after their ceremony. Make sure you ask your municipality and cemetery board for permission to take photos – you might need a permit and we don’t want the police showing up to ruin your fun. As the former chair of the Port Hope Cemetery Board I know there are some hoops to jump through to get permission for these things so make a quick call to your town hall to get the process started.
