Your wedding day is going to be one of the most important and memorable days of your entire life as a couple. The day will be filled with an array of emotions and exciting experiences that you will want to remember forever.
A few decades ago, photography was the go-to choice for couples looking to capture their wedding days. Today, both photography and video are popular choices. Video takes you back to specific moments in a unique way. Hearing the voices of your loved ones and reliving special moments with sound and movement is truly special.
It’s not always easy to find someone who can help you capture an artistic, emotional, and beautiful wedding video though. Here are some tips to help you along the way:
Take the time to do some research
Before you consider meeting with a potential videographer, go through their past work and any reviews. Watching their videos will give you a good idea of what to expect. Wedding videos should be a work of art. You want to choose someone who knows how to capture the events of the day but can also incorporate beauty and emotion. A videographer should also be experienced enough to know when to look for those key moments such as dad seeing his daughter for the first time.
Set your budget
Video generally does require slightly more budget than photography, so plan accordingly. Before you decide what YOU think any service costs, look into what these services actually do cost. I hear too many couples tell me something is out of their budget and when I ask how they came up with the number for their budget, the answer is always “we made it up based on what we feel it’s worth”. Do some real world research and find out what things cost before deciding what your budget should be, or if you can afford them at all. Also, keep an eye out for wedding photographers that offer photography/video combination packages.
Meet them in person
Since photography and video is such a personal experience, you should always meet with your photographer/videographer before you hire them. You want to make sure that their personality is a good fit for you (and be clear on what a good fit looks like) and that you feel comfortable around them. This person will be with you for your entire wedding day, giving you instructions and helping pose you so you want to make sure you get along and if they have the kind of personality you respond well to. It also helps to come to the meeting with a few examples and to be clear on your style and any other details that are important to you.
Talk logistics
Once you decide on a videographer, find out more about the size of their crew and the equipment they will be using. You want to make sure that everything will blend in discreetly and not detract from the special moments throughout the day. I have worked with many videographers and sometimes I don’t notice them, and sometimes I feel like I’m on a movie set. You also want to discuss your venue and the general order of the day so that equipment and timing can be planned accordingly. Lastly, if you want the videography team to dress in a specific way, let them know ahead of time.
ProTip! Ask them how they work with photographers to get the best footage and not be in all of the wedding photos. I’ve seen photos of a ceremony and the videographer was so close to the couple, there was no way he could be edited out – and he was in every single photo!
ProTip! Ask your Officiant if they are comfortable being mic’d for video – depending on your location your Officiant might very well be a minister or priest and we aren’t always cool with being ordered about by your vendors.
Trust them to do their thing
If you’re investing in a professional videographer, you need to be able to sit back and trust them to do what they do best. There’s no need to add any extra stress onto your day by trying to control what’s captured. You hired them because they are the best right?
From there, you can look forward to reliving your wedding day in one of the most special ways possible.
PS: Don’t forget to make a backup of your video once you receive it!
