After seeing what can be done in the last few years, micro weddings have become increasingly popular.
Couples are learning more and more towards smaller guest lists, so their weddings are intimate, and they get to enjoy every single guest. The budgets are smaller, the stress is lower, and finding a location for your ceremony and celebration is a lot easier. A lot of my couples are opting for restaurants over halls and venues, backyard, parks, beaches, and even their own living rooms which makes their weddings feel like fun parties with some extra magic thrown in!
The question I always get when a couple books a mini or micro wedding is…what other vendors do we need? Keep in mind, a mini or micro wedding is NOT the same as eloping, so you will want more than just your Officiant. Here are the vendors I believe will make your small wedding extra special while still keeping your costs down…
Officiant
You will need someone to perform your legal marriage ceremony, so if there is one vendor you want to hire, this is it. In 2020 and 2021 I was often the only vendor at weddings and often said I was the Bubba Gump of the wedding industry as I seemed to be the last vendor standing. No matter what else you decide to do for your wedding, make sure you hire your Officiant well in advance.
Photographer
This is your wedding day – you will want to remember every moment. A photographer is a vendor you don’t want to skip. Your wedding might be small, but it is still one of the most important days in your life! Yes, you might be tempted to hire your cousin who owns a camera, but the photos just won’t be the same – trust me on this one. A professional photographer knows how to work with other vendors, has the right equipment, knows which moments to look out for, and can make those small, but significant, edits. What’s more, you don’t need to hire a photographer for an entire day – you can decide how many hours you need based on your budget. I know lots of photographers who are happy to give you a quote for 3 hours, 5 hours…or how ever many hours you feel you need.
Hair and Makeup
You want to look and feel your best on your wedding day, so get your hair and makeup done by a professional if you can. On the morning of your wedding, you deserve to be pampered and your hair and makeup is not something you should have to worry about. You are going to be photographed a lot, and a professional makeup artist knows how to make you look your best for the camera.
Food
While there is nothing wrong with preparing your own food, it’s just one more thing to get done prior to your big day. It’s not a small task either, which is why hiring a caterer is highly recommended. Keep in mind that since this is a micro wedding, the final cost won’t be nearly as high as traditional weddings and most caterers will bring everything you need – linens, cutlery, dishes, salt and pepper shakers, and then they take it all away so you aren’t left with the mess!
If you really want to take care of something yourself, you can always have your cake made by a friend or family member who knows what they are doing and has a history of making beautiful cakes. You can also ask a friend to monitor the bar as well to make sure it is always stocked.
Of course there is nothing wrong with having a potluck wedding – I personally love seeing all the aunties and cousins coming in with their crock pots and casserole dishes – you could ask each one to make your favourite dish!
The above vendors are the most essential when planning a micro or mini wedding. Your flowers, décor, music, and drinks are all aspects that you could probably take care of yourself.
If this is already sounding slightly overwhelming, you may also want to shop around for a wedding planner or coordinator who can make your life a little easier.
