Weddings come in all shapes, sizes, and styles, which is what makes them so fun and exciting. Choosing a wedding photographer is one of the biggest decisions couples will make during their planning process. However, before you can settle on a photographer, you need to decide on a style.

Knowing exactly what you want makes it much easier to narrow down your photographer choices. If you’re new to wedding photography, though, this guide will help you decide on a style that represents who you are as a couple.

Traditional

If you want to get a good idea of what traditional wedding photos look at, you could probably refer to your parent’s wedding photos. Think posed couple and group shots. In most instances, every wedding has some form of traditional photography, it all just depends on how many traditional shots you want. Traditional wedding photography is designed to be timeless.

Editorial

Editorial images are also posed but the shots are very much like what you would find in a fashion magazine. This is not a very common wedding photography style, but some couples do request it. You would also need to find a photographer that specializes in this style. If you want a high-end, luxurious look and feel, this might be the style for you.

Photojournalistic

This type of photography is all about capturing those memorable and heartfelt moments that take place throughout your wedding, very much like a news story. It’s about capturing the couple and guests in a relaxed and happy state as they celebrate together.

Arial

Arial shots are generally paired with another type of photography but they can truly capture your wedding day in a unique way. Arial shots are great for capturing your venue and ceremony exits.

Moody

When you think dark and moody, you don’t necessarily think weddings, but dark and moody can also mean romantic and dramatic. This style includes creative lighting, shadows and harsh lines. This style is not the same as black and white photography – this is a whole style on its own.

Fine Art

Fine art is very much linked to film, but it has really grown in popularity amongst newlyweds in recent years. If you want bright, light, soft, and airy, this might be the right style for you. These are the main types of wedding photography styles you’ll come across as you start your search. Some photographers specialize in several, while others specialize in one style. Find a photographer who can meet your needs and who makes you feel comfortable and confident.
