Common Wedding Flower Mistakes

Flowers are delicate, elegant, colorful, and fragrant, and add the perfect finish touch to any wedding. Planning your floral arrangements is also one of the most fun parts of the entire décor process. Before you get into discussions with your florist, it’s important that you know about some of the most common wedding flower mistakes.

Going the DIY Route

It’s only until you attempt to plan and organize your flowers yourself that you realize how difficult it is. Not only does a florist know where to source the flowers you want but they have the styling experience necessary to make sure all the arrangements look good and match the rest of your décor.

Trust me on this one…you do not want to attempt to learn and teach your bridesmaids how to arrange flowers the night before you wedding! I have had too many brides contacting me in a complete panic asking for a florist’s number to get help.

If you are experienced and skilled at flower arranging…by all means! If not, leave it to the pros!

My florist friend Del of A Thing of Beauty Seasonal Designs makes sure she gets a lot of information from you before she designs your bouquets and arrangement – she takes into account your size and shape..as well as your height! There is so much more to wedding flowers than just tying a bunch together!

Not Researching Your Options

Your flowers are going to be a focal point at your wedding, which means they require just as much planning as the rest of your wedding. While a florist is there to help you with the planning process, it certainly helps to start the meeting with some ideas in mind: colours, favourite flowers, aesthetic are all important! Bring photos of arrangements you love that you can leave with the florist so they can refer to it as they create your florial design.

Using Inconsistent Colors

For the best outcome, select two main colors for your flowers. These colors should fit in with your overall theme too. It’s this consistency that will help bring everything together in the end. You should also ensure that the colors of the flowers in your bouquets don’t blend in with your bridesmaid dresses or they won’t photograph well. Don’t be afraid to show your photographer your colour choices and ask what colour flowers they think would photograph well together!

Forgetting About Seasonality

Very often, brides get so excited about specific flowers, only to realize they don’t bloom during the month they plan to get married. Make sure that you consider the season before you start looking at flower options. Sure, your florist might be able to get your flowers in for you out of season, at a cost. This isn’t the time to be asking for ‘budget friendly’ options. What does that even mean anyway?

Failing to Consider Your Venue

Yes, it’s possible for your flowers to not match up with your venue. And you certainly don’t want to discover this on your wedding day. As you start looking at flower and greenery options, be sure to keep the style of your venue in mind. Oh…and the height of the ceiling! A good florist will be asking for all of this information!

Going Overboard

Flower arrangements are beautiful but there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. Your flower arrangements and bouquets should never be overwhelming and detract from any other décor. Using too many flowers and accessories to create your arrangements could have the opposite effect to what you’re hoping for. Want to have an epic amount of flowers? Consider a flower wall for your guests to take selfies!

Not Booking a Wedding Florist in Time

Just like any other wedding vendor, florist calendars fill up quickly. Booking a wedding florist ahead of time is essential, especially if you want someone who is in high demand. Scheduling your wedding during prime wedding season is another good reason to book someone well in advance. If you think you might be getting engaged, start researching vendors now so you can pounce as soon as the ring is on your finger! Well…have a glass of champagne and call your parents first…then pounce!

Failing to Coordinate

In the end, you want your entire wedding theme to come together seamlessly, but this won’t be possible if your vendors are not on the same page. It’s important for all of your vendors to have your wedding day timeline so everyone is on the same page and knows exactly when everything you need for your wedding is to be delivered and set up. Your venue coordinator should also be able to assist with this as well as your photographer (the vendor who is with you the longest on your wedding day besides your venue!).

Now that you know which wedding flower mistakes you should avoid, you can look forward to a much smoother process. When couples book me they get access to my Gold List of wedding vendors that I know are the best of the best and are well known for being professional and reliable…and produce the most spectacular work for you! Yep…this list includes florists!
