Top Tips for Choosing the Perfect Wedding Videographer For You!

While the right photographer is capable of producing absolutely breathtaking photos of your wedding day that you can print for albums and your home, they can’t capture every moment on the day.

It’s for this reason that so many couples are also choosing to hire a videographer for their weddings – allowing them to relive the day again and again.

If you’re considering a videographer for your own wedding, it’s important to research options just as thoroughly as you would for your wedding photography. You should also check with your venue whether or not you will be able to film before you go ahead and book a videographer.

Tips for Choosing the Right Videographer for Your Wedding

Here are a few things to think about before you decide on a videographer.

Seek out client reviews

There’s no better way to get an idea of what you can expect from a videographer than by reading through client reviews – and they’re not hard to find either. Social media and Google are the perfect places to look at customer reviews so that’s a good place to start.

Review their portfolio

In the same way that you want to make sure that your photographer has the experience and style that you’re looking for, your videographer needs to meet those criteria too. Take a careful look through each portfolio to make sure they can deliver on your vision. They will also have lots of wedding videos on social media as well so check out their facebook and instagram accounts too!

Set up a meeting

Take time to meet with each of the videographers in person to ensure that they’re a good match – and know ahead of time what that looks like to you! I often have couples say they need to find out if I will be a good fit and when I ask what a good fit looks like to them…they have no answer.

Remember…your vendors are with you for 1 day – we don’t need to be best friends with everyone, and we don’t need to fit into your friend group and family. We simply need to do the best job possible for you! So focus on the work rather than how they might become part of your life going forward.

Having said that, it’s important to have an idea of what you want out of your videographer (and other vendors) so you can express that during the meeting. If you can’t see eye to eye, it’s not going to make you feel very comfortable on your wedding day.

Discuss your expectations

Not every videographer is going to be right for you, which is why it’s important to discuss your goals and vision with them during your in-person meeting. This will also give them a good idea of whether they can actually deliver on your expectations. Know what your expectations are before talking to any vendors!

Ask how they work with your photographer

Too often I have seen photographers miss the shots because the videographer is too close to the couple and ends up the central focus of the photo. In the wedding groups we are always seeing photographers asking how to get videographers to respect everyone and stay far enough away that they aren’t interfering with the photography of weddings.

Ask your photographer for recommendations

They will likely have a list of their favourite videographers or might even have their own on staff. Either way, they will know for sure who is easy to work with, has a great personality, and creates awesome videos.

Ask about equipment and replacements

Every reputable photographer will use reliable equipment and have the right processes in place to ensure that your footage is safe. Ask your videographer about the equipment that will be used and whether there’s a contingency plan in place should something go wrong. It also helps to ask whether there is someone who can fill in should they not be able to make it on the day.

There is something magical about having video footage of your wedding day, but only if it’s done correctly so take your time with this important decision.
